There was some confusion about the spelling of defence in the last class. If you look up defence in your POCD, you'll see that DEFENCE is listed first with DEFENSE as a variant. The first word listing is the preferred Canadian spelling. There is a note on this on p. v in your POCD (the first page of explanations before the dictionary entries begin).

In Canada DEFENCE is preferred for all uses: as a noun, in sports, and as an adjective. You use a defence mechanism. The man felt defenceless. DEFENSIVE, however, is spelled with an s.

How do you spell LICENCE in Canada? Look on your driving licence if you have one. NOTE in the POCD LICENCE is preferred as a noun. LICENSE is a verb. If you are wondering LOOK IT UP.
